In a sad incident that unfolded in Sebokeng, the harsh reality of teen pregnancies came to light when a newborn baby was discovered in a plastic bag, abandoned at a water-logged bridge construction site. The small community, deeply affected by the incident, rallied together to ensure the safety of the infant.

The alarming situation unfolded in Small Farm, where it is believed that a teenage mother gave birth in isolation at her family home. Shortly afterward, she made the heart-wrenching decision to abandon the baby at an abandoned bridge construction site in Zone 7.

The deserted location, with its water-logged surroundings, became the scene of a rescue mission thanks to the watchful eyes of the community.

Vigilant residents, noticing a young woman acting suspiciously, observed her leaving a plastic bag at the construction site. Acting promptly, they investigated and were met with the distressing sight of a newborn baby floating in the dirty water within the bag.

Swift action, including the use of a rake, allowed them to retrieve the bag and rescue the infant.

Eyewitnesses recounted the heartbreaking moment when the faint whimpers of the naked baby were heard just moments before the bag was opened.

The incident quickly garnered attention on social media, drawing a crowd of onlookers who expressed shock and concern.

As Reported by Sedibeng Ster – Community leader Mandla Dipanyekga revealed that they managed to trace the teenage mother through the collaboration of concerned residents.

Visiting her at her home, they discovered her visibly shaken and traumatized. The teenager was questioned, and realizing the gravity of the situation, the community members promptly arranged for her to receive medical assistance at the hospital.

“We are glad that we saved two lives, rather than one,” expressed Tumelo Tsotetsi, one of the residents involved in the rescue. Both the baby and the teenage mother are now receiving the necessary care, with the community coming together to contribute clothing and formula for the newborn.

Evaton police spokeswoman Constable Thulisile Msibi confirmed that a case of concealment of birth has been opened, and investigations are currently underway.

This incident sheds light on the broader issue of teen pregnancies, emphasizing the urgent need for community awareness and support to address the challenges faced by young mothers.

In a startling statistic, it was revealed that 88,000 schoolgirls between the ages of 15 and 19 fell pregnant in the last year, underscoring the importance of addressing the root causes and providing comprehensive solutions to support vulnerable teenage mothers in the community.
